For more than a decade, residents of NYCHA housing have been battling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sternmold.com\/blog\/2020\/02\/05\/new-york-city-housing-authority-to-spend-50-million-in-the-fight-against-mold\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mold-related issues<\/a>. Much of the problem has been blamed on poor maintenance and failure to adequately repair water damage.<\/p>\n<p>Last January, the NYCHA kicked off a $50 million project to clean and update ventilation systems in their 326 apartment complexes. In addition, the agency has earmarked another $156 million for pipe work to be completed over the next five years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New York City Council Steps In<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In late February, the New York City Council passed legislation in an effort to further assist public housing residents struggling with\u00a0mold problems. NYC is now required to give tenants information about reporting complaints.<\/p>\n<p>According to City Council member Ritchie Torres, the NYCHA has a dismal history of responding to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sternmold.com\/blog\/2020\/03\/25\/when-should-tenants-withold-rent-does-mold-count\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tenant complaints about mold<\/a>.
